rixben HOUSE
Mascot NSW
This project involved alterations and additions to a single-storey brick veneer home, featuring a complete redesign of the ground floor interior and the addition of a first-floor storey to accommodate private quarters. The client brief emphasised the need for sun-drenched outdoor living spaces and a design that maximises natural light in the heart of the home.
Situated in a tight bend of a cul-de-sac, the site has an irregular wedge-like shape that necessitates the house to be set back considerably from the street, resulting in a large front yard bathed in northern light. A spacious north-facing timber deck serves as a transition between the internal living spaces and the pool area located in the front yard. Landscaping at the street front softens the textural palette of the yard, providing natural screening for privacy and shade.
The interior of the home is bright and airy, with natural light flooding into the kitchen and dining areas from the timber deck. Additionally, the stairwell adjacent to the living space allows sunlight to gently illuminate the heart of the home. The architecture is characterised by a series of staggered prisms, each strategically designed to capture sunlight as they extend further back into the site.
