ryde civic hub & apartments

Darug Country | Ryde NSW

A design competition entry for a transformative mixed-use precinct in Ryde, NSW.

Positioned on an "Island Site" between the dense Top Ryde Shopping Centre and the low-density suburban fabric to the west, this proposal introduces a mediating architectural landform: "The Floating Urban Mountain". Designed to bridge these contrasting urban scales, the massing slopes gently downward toward the residential neighbourhood, featuring articulated concrete terraces, hanging gardens, and agri-urban farming facilities. By carving out the base, the building floats above the landscape, preserving the ground plane for an expansive public parkland, civic hub, and integrated bus interchange.

The main structure accommodates a diverse mix of residential apartments, keyworker housing, and commercial quarters for the City of Ryde Council, while a secondary building houses flexible community facilities, an art gallery, and a rooftop venue. Connected via a public Land Bridge over Devlin Street, the precinct incorporates a tri-generation power system, rooftop solar farms, stormwater harvesting, and natural blackwater filtration - establishing a self-sustaining micro-economy, healthy ecology, and vibrant civic heart for Top Ryde.
