taichung CITY cultural centre

Taichung Taiwan

A design competition entry for a major cultural landmark in Taichung City, Taiwan.

Titled "Playing with the Sun, the Moon and the Stars", this proposal for the Taichung City Cultural Centre weaves traditional Taiwanese folklore and Atayal indigenous weaving patterns into a visionary urban precinct. Inspired by "The Legend of Sun Moon Lake", the design translates metaphysical narratives and cosmic aspirations into an architectural language celebrating local history, natural connection, and future growth.

The project blends a public library and the Museum of Fine Arts within a hybridised, multi-layered environment of terraced gardens, vertical agricultural parks, and a flexible central plaza. Sweeping curvilinear walls and "The Weave" - a responsive operable garden facade of timber screens and glass louvres - create a dynamic textural dialogue between the architecture and the city. Designed as a sustainable extension of Taichung Gateway Park, the precinct integrates solar-tracking metallic photovoltaic domes and advanced rainwater harvesting micro-ecosystems, establishing an adaptable cultural hub that blends parkland with civic life.
